Have you ever heard of ‘set-jetting’? Its the trend of traveling to destinations that were the filming locations of movies. Here’s some locations that you can visit right here in Mayo!
☘️ The Banshees of Inisherin: The film at the tip of everyone’s tongue, The Banshees of Inisherin is a record-breaking film with a total of nine Oscar nominations! The Martin McDonagh movie was filmed on location on Achill Island, Co. Mayo, and also on Inishmore, one of the Aran Islands in Co. Galway.
☘️ The Quiet Man: The village of Cong straddles the border of Galway and Mayo and is perhaps the most famous of the film’s locations. Cong now hosts a museum dedicated to The Quiet Man movie and visitors can take guided tours to the locations where the famous fight scene was shot, where Sean Thornton and Mary Kate Danaher courted, and to see the Dying Man’s house, Pat Cohan’s Bar and the Reverend Playfair’s House.
☘️ Wild Mountain Thyme: Filming took place in 2019 in Mayo at various locations, including Crossmolina and Ballina. The film also features Nephin and some of the spectacular scenery of the Wild Atlantic Way.
☘️ The Field: The 1990 Irish drama film written and directed by Jim Sheridan, was mostly filmed in the village of Leenane on the borderline of Galway and Mayo in north Connemara. 'The Field' itself is located between Leenane and Westport.
☘️ Irish Wish: The Netflix movie, due to be released this year, features stars such as Lindsay Lohan, Ed Speelers and Jane Seymour. Filming took place in various places throughout Ireland, including Knock airport and The Octagon, Westport – right outside The Wyatt Hotel!
